Rev. Mike Miller, Pastor
Born? I was born about five decades ago in a little town called Red Bay in Northwest Alabama. My family moved a couple of times during my school years. We lived in Anniston for a while, but I consider Decatur my hometown. That's where I graduated from high school, and where my folks still live.
Married to & Years? I have been happily married to the former Anita McCaghren of Danville, AL for more than 30 years.
Where did you meet your spouse? We met as freshmen at Calhoun Community College in Decatur.
Children? We have one daughter, Leah, (and son-in-law, Casey) who live in McMinnville, TN.
FBCC Anniversary Date? I have served as senior pastor here at FBCC since May, 1992.
Education? I'm a graduate of Samford University and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, NC. I'm currently working on my doctorate through New Orleans Seminary.
First Job? My first part-time job was sweeping up trash at Point Mallard Park in Decatur. My first full-time job was pastoring a small country church in Lawrence County as a nineteen-year-old. It was at this time Anita and I married, and after about a year we moved to Birmingham to complete my college education.
When did you invite Jesus into your heart? I invited Christ into my life when I was about eleven years old. I don't remember the exact date, but I remember the moment vividly. I was a very shy kid, and it took me about a year or so before I finally came forward in church to make a public confession of my faith. It was when I took this step of faith and obedience, however, that God really began to work in my life in exciting ways.
What is on your iPod? What's an iPod? I just went from eight tracks to cassette tapes! Just joking. Well, kind of. Let's just say I'm not exactly on the cutting edge of technology. Like most of us, I am a product of my generation. I use the computer to do word processing, some emailing, and some occasional research on the world wide web. I even text a little on my cell phone now, but I'm not into tweeting or Facebook yet.
Favorite Song / Hymn? If I had to pick just one, I would have to say the old classic hymn, "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross." I find it deeply worshipful, especially around Easter.
Favorite Movie? "It's a Wonderful Life" starring Jimmy Stewart. It's an impactful reminder of the value of a human life.
Hobbies? Flower gardening, watching college football, and reading John Grisham novels.
Favorite Vacation Point? Orange Beach, Gatlinburg, and any place I've not been before. I love seeing different parts of our country when I can. Yellowstone is one of my favorite all-time spots.
Favorite Verse? It's hard to beat John 3:16 for succinctly describing what God's grace is all about. I also like Romans 15:13 because it talks about the peace, hope, and joy that everybody in the world is looking for, and that we have in Christ. Psalm 34 encourages me in tough times.
What do you enjoy about your ministry position? The positive, loving, Spirit-filled people I am around who encourage me daily; and the awesome privilege that is mine of proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ every week to the great folks who are FBCC!
